Swag直播 is thrilled to be cheering on two talented athletes at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

Grace Harvey, Dental Public Health master鈥檚 student and immunology graduate at Swag直播, will be heading to the French capital this month to compete in the para-swimming events.

This is not Grace鈥檚 first Paralympic appearance, having clinched a silver medal at the Tokyo 2020 Games in 100m breaststroke (SB5). She went on to win gold in the same event at the World Para Swimming Championships in Madeira in 2022, and silver in the Swag直播 event in 2023 held at the Swag直播 Aquatics Centre.

She has come a long way in her swimming career, having started the sport for physiotherapy and joining her first swimming club at 9 years old. Grace is now the current European champion in the 100m breaststroke (SB5), collecting gold at the 2024 Championships in Madeira and silver in the 100m freestyle (S6).

From Ware, Hertfordshire, Grace is a 10-time British record holder and she swam for the University at the 2018 British Universities and Colleges Sport championships. She is also a University of Swag直播 Sport Scholar, with her extensive training regime comprising of 8 pool sessions, 3 gym sessions and 2 indoor rowing sessions a week.

Also appearing at the Paralympics this year is Archie Atkinson. Enrolled on the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) and supported by the University, he will be making his Paralympic debut as part of Team GB鈥檚 para-cycling team.

Despite being in the early stages of his cycling career, Archie has already won gold in the MC4 individual pursuit at the UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships this year. He also secured gold in the MC4 scratch race at the UCI Cycling World Championships - Para-track, and bronze in the MC4 road race at the UCI Cycling World Championships - Para-road.

Sportswashing is still highly effective despite more awareness among fans /about/news/sportswashing-is-still-highly-effective/ /about/news/sportswashing-is-still-highly-effective/650435As the European football championships continue in Germany, new research has revealed that 鈥榮portswashing鈥 - the practice of using sporting events or teams to improve a country's reputation - is still highly effective, despite increased awareness of the issue among fans.

]]>
As the European football championships continue in Germany, new research has revealed that 鈥榮portswashing鈥 - the practice of using sporting events or teams to improve a country's reputation - is still highly effective, despite increased awareness of the issue among fans.

Dr Vitaly Kazakov of the School of Environment, Education and Development is currently undertaking a research project in Iceland, the nation with the same population as Stoke-on-Trent which surprised everyone by beating England and reaching the quarter-finals at Euro 2016. He has conducted in-depth interviews with a range of football stakeholders there including fans, sport and international affairs journalists, sports club administrators and academics.

He has found that people are very keenly aware of the many problematic issues surrounding sporting events or which are revealed by the spotlight being shone upon host nations 鈥 for example, he found that the majority of people interviewed wouldn鈥檛 really be aware of or care deeply about worker鈥檚 rights in Qatar if the country had not hosted the 2022 World Cup.

Yet, because of the 鈥榝eel good factor鈥 which surrounds sporting events like football tournaments, sporting events can still achieve the envisioned political goals of illiberal host states despite any negative publicity. Many Icelandic fans travelled to Russia for the first time because of their team鈥檚 participation in the 2018 World Cup, and reported having good impressions of the country despite years of critical coverage relating to its aggressive foreign policy, LGBTQ+ rights and political persecution.

Fans reported feeling conflicted on how to feel about the events, and how to react to accusations of sportswashing. Fans and journalists are also keenly aware that it is not just the host states that are part of the problem 鈥 they also blame the organisers, for example pointing to FIFA for enabling Russia鈥檚 geopolitical actions because they awarded the 2018 World Cup to Moscow despite the annexation of Crimea just a few years previously.

In general, fans and journalists realise that sports events could be problematic at the same time as helping to expose some wider social, political, economic, environmental problems and inequalities. Even in Iceland itself, after the feel-good stories of the 2016 and 2018 tournaments, the sexual violence scandals associated with some of the squad鈥檚 players dampened the enthusiasm around their sporting achievements. No notable Icelandic player was ultimately convicted, but the legacies of their successes in both tournaments in France and Russia are also placed into the new context of former heroes鈥 reputations being significantly affected.

鈥淢ore research is needed to examine both how sporting events impact people鈥檚 understanding of and engagement with political issues. Ultimately, we need to be figuring out how to channel the power of sport in productive ways.鈥

Friends and supporters of a University of Swag直播 student midwife diagnosed with a rare type of cancer are to raise money for charity on a 5K run in Media City.

Early this year, Claudia Boardman, 22, received the devastating news she had Rhabdomyosarcoma 鈥 a less common type of soft tissue cancer, which can appear in any part of the body.

They will join the Media City 5K , on 31 August from 7pm-9pm raising money for the charity Sarcoma UK.

The student, who was in her final year of the midwifery course, had to make the difficult decision to interrupt her studies to receive extensive treatment for the illness.

After having back pain for 6 months, one morning Claudia woke up and realised she had lost the feeling in most of her lower body.

A visit to A&E revealed a large tumour on her spine, which was pressing against her spinal cord and chest.

She was immediately transferred to a different hospital where she had emergency surgery to have part of the tumour removed.

The operation was successful, but a biopsy revealed the tumour was a rhabdomyosarcoma.

On average, only112 cases of rhabdomyosarcoma are diagnosed every year in England, and now, Claudia is having nine rounds of intense chemotherapy, more major surgery to remove the rest of the tumour and radiotherapy. She will eventually need more chemotherapy following the treatment.

Claudia said: 鈥淚 chose midwifery because I always wanted to do a rewarding job supporting and empowering women, and what better way to do that than helping bring life into the world.

Being diagnosed with cancer meant I had to interrupt from my university course and my world had been turned completely upside down.

鈥淚 started treatment in March and lost all of my hair just 2 weeks after starting treatment.

鈥淔ast forward to June, and I am on my fifth round chemotherapy, with 4 to go.鈥

Her friend and fellow student Katie Needham said: 鈥淎s Claudia鈥檚 peers, we were all shocked and upset that she was having to leave the course indefinitely.

鈥淚t has been difficult knowing that her and her family were faced with so many operations and appointments.

鈥淏ut organising the race has given us something to focus on and do something positive both for Claudia and Sarcoma UK.鈥

She added: 鈥淎ny donation, no matter how small would be appreciated as a show of support to Claudia and her amazing family.鈥

Louisa Morgan, Events Manager at Sarcoma UK, said: 鈥淲e would like to say a huge thank you to Katie, Claudia and their peers at the University of Swag直播 for taking on this challenge.

鈥淎round 5,300 people in the UK are diagnosed with sarcoma cancer each year, and sadly very few people recognise its signs and symptoms. Sarcoma UK relies on generous voluntary donations, and the energy and imagination of our tireless fundraisers and supporters.

鈥淭he money raised by Katie and the team will help us to fund vital research to improve outcomes for everyone affected by sarcoma.鈥

A master鈥檚 student from Swag直播 is to join the world鈥檚 elite para swimmers in Swag直播 when she competes at the world championships this week.

Grace Harvey, a University of Swag直播 immunology graduate and now taking a Masters in Public Health (Dental Public Health). , will be represent the British Para-Swimming team鈥 at the championships across three events.

The University of Swag直播 Sport Scholar who has cerebral palsy, began swimming when she was 4 to go on to win world gold in 100m Breaststroke (SB5) in 2022 and Paralympic (Tokyo 2020) & Commonwealth (Birmingham 2022) Silver medals.

She will be taking part in the womens 100m backstroke S6 (31st July), the womens 200m Individual Medley - SM6 (2nd August) and the womens 100m Breaststroke - SB5 (4th August).

From Ware in Hertfordshire, she has broken 11 British records and swam for the University at the 2018 British Universities and Colleges Sport championships.

After watching the 2004 and 2008 Paralympic Games, she decided she wanted to compete and joined a club at age nine.

The swimmer follows a gruelling training regime: 8 pool sessions 鈥 around 16 hours, 3 gym sessions and 2 indoor rowing sessions.

She said: 鈥淚鈥檓 really looking forward to worlds starting, I woke up this morning thinking 鈥榦h my goodness we actually get to race!鈥 鈥 this is the meet we鈥檝e trained for all year and I think it鈥檚 so exciting that it鈥檚 in my home training pool as well so I鈥檓 really familiar with the facilities. Especially post the refurbishment as well it鈥檚 a really welcoming environment to have international competition in.鈥

鈥淚 definitely wouldn鈥檛 be able to study my master鈥檚 if I didn鈥檛 have the support from the sport scholarship team. They were incredibly instrumental in my switching my full-time study to part-time study because the demands of a masters and training for a world championships are intense. I did start off the year thinking I could manage both but I didn鈥檛 want to have a subpar performance in either so they were really key in giving me the support I needed to say 鈥榶ou know what I am struggling here鈥 and so I could actually succeed in both.鈥

She added: 鈥淚t鈥檚 so exciting! When you see all the tickets and it鈥檚 saying 鈥榝inal few tickets remaining鈥 and then they鈥檙e coming down because all the sessions are selling out 鈥 it is just so exciting for para-sport, for the competitors racing and it鈥檚 nice knowing people want to come and support us at our local world championships in Swag直播.鈥

The competition will be at Swag直播 Aquatics Centre, jointly owned by Swag直播, Swag直播 City Council and Swag直播 Metropolitan university, built ahead of the Commonwealth Games in 2002.

The centre has just undergone the first stage of a significant refurb in time to host the Para-Swimming Championships next week.

Dr Lucy O'malley, Lecturer in Health Services Research in the Division of Dentistry and Grace's supervisor said: 鈥When I first met Grace, I was struck by her passion and enthusiasm for her studies. She is working extremely hard on the programme and has achieved some outstanding grades. That she can do this alongside her busy training schedule is testament to her dedication and commitment. Grace is multi-talented and an inspiration, we here at the University of Swag直播 are incredibly proud of her and wish her all the best for the Championships.鈥

James Marenghi, senior sports manager at Swag直播 said: 鈥淲e are really excited to have the world's best para-swimmers competing on our campus. It is also a proud moment for us to have one of our student athletes represent the British team as well as the University.

鈥淓veryone at the University wishes Grace the very best of luck for the meet and we will all be supporting her to win more World championship medals!鈥

You can watch the championships live on the but check out Channel 4鈥檚 one-hour highlights programme on 20/08/23 at 8.30am.

The . Heats start at 9am each day with finals start from 5.30pm.

Students from Swag直播 are putting their hearts and soles into a 24-hour relay run for a homelessness charity.

The event will take place from midday on 17 November to the same time the next day with students and staff completing 5km loops into the city from the Student Union building on Oxford Road.

Virtual runners will also be able upload their times to the event if they can’t make it to Swag直播.

Organised by the student Run Wild Society, they will be running to raise funds for “A Bed Every Night", a supported by the Greater Swag直播 Mayor's Charity.

To donate, visit the page. There will also be a Facebook event and you can join in the fun by clicking

In its third year, the organisers hope to better the £3000 raised in 2020’s virtual event during the Lockdown.

More details are available on the Run Society and anyone who wants to donate can visit the Society’s page.

Anyone of any ability is invited to join the event in which the organisers are targeting a distance of 1,407 km - the distance to Land’s End to John O’ Groats

But they’ll have to pull out all the stops if they are to beat last year’s virtual event- in which runners logged a massive 2,700Km.

James Bannister is a fourth year physics student and President of the Run Wild Society.

He said: “We were delighted with the response to last year’s virtual event in the depths of Lockdown, but it’s always great to be part of the event in person.

“And we want to make it as inclusive as possible, because running is for pretty much anyone so it’s not a race.

“Of course participants can run for as long as they like, but some people new to running may out in an enormous effort to run 5k which could be seen as a greater achievement.

“There’ll also be a couple of walking waves, so whatever your ability, please do come and join us!”

A provides a bed, warm welcome, and personal support for anyone who is sleeping rough or at imminent risk of sleeping rough in Greater Swag直播.

Greater Swag直播 Mayor’s Charity raises vital funds to support the front line as well as invest in homeless prevention projects and counts Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Swag直播 as its patron.

“The dedication she shows to her athletic training and her academic studies is a real testament to her determination to succeed in everything she tackles. We wish her every success in Tokyo.”

And Professor Tokiharu Takahashi, currently in Tokyo, has been teaching the athlete in his tutorial class since last October.

He said: “In the midst of the pandemic and with no prospect of holding the Games, while studying the complicated human anatomy, Aimee has tenaciously trained and finally made it this far.

“She is truly an Olympian and we, the anatomy tutorial group, wish her all the best. Go for it Aimee!”

Aimee, who runs for Sale Harriers, was at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

After running the consideration time for GB selection earlier, .

Aimee, from Stockport, has been running the steeplechase since 2014 thanks to the work of the Diane Modahl Sports Foundation.

The foundation created and run by Modahl - a former Commonwealth 800m champion - works with disadvantaged children from across the North West of England.

Aimee went along for fun, she told the website three point start, and after a few months was introduced to Diane’s husband, who is now her coach Vicente.

“One of the first things he said to me was that I had the potential to be a world class athlete, I was completely naive to whatever that meant but just enjoyed the challenge of training and competing,” she told the website.

Aimee ran for Swag直播, setting a British Universities and Colleges Sport championship record when she won gold in the 2019 BUCS 2000m Steeple Chase.

“You’ve been a massive support”, she told them in a tweet after the event.

She told Vinco in an interview last year: “2020 has been very strange and with the pandemic cancelling the European Championships and delaying the Olympic Games until 2021, I found it very hard early on in lockdown.

“I was just so excited to see the season opening up and that’s just got me back on track.”

Marcus Rashford to receive Honorary Degree /about/news/marcus-rashford-to-receive-honorary-degree/ /about/news/marcus-rashford-to-receive-honorary-degree/398780Swag直播 United and England footballer, Marcus Rashford, will receive an honorary doctorate from the University later this summer.

]]>

Swag直播 United and England footballer, Marcus Rashford, will receive an honorary doctorate from Swag直播 later this summer it has been announced today (Wednesday, 15 July).

The award, which is the highest honour the University can bestow, will be for his remarkable campaign against child poverty off the field and outstanding sporting achievements on the pitch. At just 22 years old he will be the youngest ever recipient of an honorary degree from Swag直播.

The University, like Marcus, has social responsibility at its core and has given such awards to Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Bobby Charlton, sharing a long history with the club that Marcus is now a part of. Rashford is already a key player for club and country, but his ongoing charity work has seen him make headlines on both the front and back pages in recent weeks.

He said: “It’s a proud day for myself and my family. When you look at the great names that have been awarded this doctorate in the past, it’s humbling. We still have a long way to go in the fight to combat child poverty in this country but receiving recognition from your city means we are heading in the right direction and that means a lot. Thank you to Swag直播.”

During the lockdown, Rashford, from Wythenshawe in Swag直播, teamed up with the poverty and food waste charity, FareShare. The collaboration has led to £20 million raised in financial and food donations enabling 3.9 million meals to be distributed to the country’s most vulnerable every week during the Global COVID-19 pandemic.

On 15 June, he pushed the campaign forward even further by writing a heartfelt open letter to the UK Government. He followed up this message with a high-profile publicity and social media campaign drawing on his own personal experiences of using foodbanks and afterschool clubs growing up.

36 hours later the Government announced a change in policy, extending the food voucher scheme for those children on free school meals throughout the summer holidays. Rashford’s campaign was credited as a major turning point in the Government’s thinking.

Now, despite the return of Premier League football, the striker says he will continue to campaign for those most vulnerable across the UK.

President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell, said: “Marcus is an extraordinary young man with an extraordinary talent and drive that stretches well beyond the football field.

“His work for charity and his high-profile campaign will not only help countless young people across our own city, but across the entire country.

“Our university has social responsibility at its core and this sense of civic pride and duty is something we are proud to share with Marcus. That is why the University is delighted to make Marcus our youngest ever recipient of an honorary degree.”

Now back on the pitch, Rashford is enjoying one of his most productive seasons for the club he joined at just seven years old. Since scoring on his debut in February 2016, so far in his United career Rashford has won the FA Cup, EFL Cup, FA Community Shield and UEFA Europa League.

A spokesperson from Swag直播 United said: “Marcus is an exceptional player and an exceptional person. His work with FareShare and his focus on child poverty make him richly deserving of this tremendous honour and everyone at Swag直播 United is incredibly proud of him.”

A University of Swag直播 medical student has made her senior debut with England in the netball Nations Cup.

Amy Carter was awarded her first cap against New Zealand by coming on in the final quarter in a bid to whittle down the world champions’ lead, though the side lost 64-48.

But in her second game against South Africa, Amy helped turn around the side’s fortunes, coming on in the second half to help the team win 58-54 after trailing in the first half.

She went on to play in the remaining two fixtures, including her first start in the 3rd place playoff, in which she was integral in helping England beat South Africa again to win the Bronze medal.

Head Coach Jess Thirlby told BBC News that the student has a ‘huge instinct on attack’ and ‘ability to win the ball’ adding it was as though she's been part of the team longer than just 4 games.

Amy is one of the University’s Sport Scholar athletes and supported by the Sport department, helps athletes to achieve academic and sporting sport success.

The Centre was in the U21 Netball Europe squad, Fast-5 Netball World Series squad in 2018 and a reserve for the 2017 Netball World Youth Cup.

In addition, she played a large number of England A games against teams in the top six in the world rankings and was impressive in her performances.

She plays her netball for Swag直播 Thunder during the Vitality Netball Superleague season, and won the Grand Final in 2019.

She said: “It’s amazing to have gained my first cap on home soil against the defending World Champions. I couldn’t have had a better opportunity to enter senior international netball and would like to thank the University of Swag直播 and the medical education staff for supporting me and allowing me to have time away from my course to compete in the Nations Cup.”

Swag直播 - one of the 11 founding members of inter-varsity sport -has celebrated its 100th anniversary at a special event.

The first ever track and field event held in May 1919 was at the University’s Fallowfield campus, contested by the then inter-varsity Athletics Board of England and Wales (IVAB)

The 11 founding members were Aberystwyth, Bangor, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Leeds, Liverpool, Swag直播, Nottingham, Sheffield and Durham.

Students, staff, and alumni heard Vince Mayne, CEO of the current version IVAB, British University College Sport (BUCS) spoke about how physical activity in the sector has grown and developed over a 100 years

He highlighted the huge scale of student competitions in the UK and the investments in world class sporting facilities across the sector.

Vicky Ackerley, Head of Sport & Active Lifestyles also payed homage student athletes included Ron Unsworth, a former Olympian who advocated for the University and its sporting legacy throughout his life.

She also outlined the University’s most recent £90m student accommodation development in Fallowfield, Unsworth Park named in his memory.

The University’s sporting legacy dates back to over 100 years: the Athletic Union established in 1885, along with the Christie Championships vs. Leeds and Liverpool Universities founded a year later, and highlighted the impact of our sporting Alumni XXI Club.

A panel discussion chaired by Alumna and former European Judo Champion Rowena Birch, highlighted the sporting and education journeys of four current students Thomas Lewis (Mathematics 3rd year) Allen Judge (Law with Politics 2nd Year), Jason Hui (Material Sciences PhD final year) and Grace Harvey (Immunology 2nd year).

Vicky concluded the evening celebrating the wide programme and workforce that engage over 16,000 students & staff each year, highlighting the employability skills gained through voluntary workforce opportunities, engagement with civic and social responsibility agendas through the annual Purple Wave 10k event, through to de-stress programmes especially around exam periods that support student wellbeing.

She said: ‘We are very lucky to have such a rich sporting heritage at Swag直播, and to have played a crucial role in the creation of inter-varsity sport across the UK one hundred years ago. This event has enabled us to reflect on previous glory and celebrate how sport in higher education has grown and evolved, and more than ever is contributing to the development and wellbeing of our people”

It could take half a season for a footballer to adjust to a new team following a big money transfer to a new league according to analysis by Swag直播 based on data provided by a club.

University students have used in-depth performance data to define how long it takes football players to find their form when transferring between clubs in Europe’s biggest leagues.

This year’s final marked the cessation of European men’s club football for another season. Like clockwork the back-pages became flooded with footballing transfer gossip and eye-watering sums of money for sought after stars throughout the summer.

Now a University of Swag直播 project in association with a Premier League club has delved into a huge data set to determine the time it takes for players to settle-in when transitioning to a different league in a new country. The team found that not only are there differences in transition times between the leagues, but the position of the player also heavily impacts on their initial form.

Speculation in the transfer market isn’t an exact science, but new data analysis suggests it could be. With access to a wealth of valuable data from Opta, the team found several striking statistics based on years of comparative information on individual performances.

Upon transferring a forward player to England from another European league, a Premier League club can expect that player to take 6 matches to adjust if they transfer from Spain, or 18 matches if they transfer from France or the Netherlands. Whereas for a defender, there is no adjustment period if they transfer to England from Spain, but they might take nine matches if they come from the .

Dr Andrew Markwick, a Lecturer in the school of Physics and Astronomy set the big data challenge for his students. “Using a large data set of player performance statistics spanning the main European leagues going back several seasons, the students were able to quantify the transition period occurring when players transfer between these leagues.” he said.

“They found that such a period does indeed exist, and that it is different for different origin and destination leagues, and that it varies by position. The project work confirms that in general a transition period does exist and quantifies it. This information would be very valuable to clubs operating in the transfer market, particularly if a short-term change is sought.”

Each summer, transfer windows seems to carry inevitable new records for spending between Europe’s biggest leagues. English Premier League clubs alone spent £1.2 billion on acquiring new talent by the close of the window last August.

Jelle Houtman from the School of Physics and Astronomy said: “It’s amazing the University gave us the opportunity to research something in which we’re so interested. Our previous years here helped us to develop some great ideas about how we could tackle this project, using machine learning algorithms on a massive dataset and the results lined up very well with expectations too.”

The team focussed on transfers between clubs in England, Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Italy and France. The biggest settling period by far is for defenders moving from England’s Premier league to in France.

The transition period is determined by individuals’ prior level of performance and the change in stats caused by a big money transfer to a different club.

Physics student James Simpson who also help evaluate the data said: "Having access to such an extensive Opta dataset from the first week was an exciting prospect. It was great to work on this project as it gave us a lot of freedom to investigate a subject we were genuinely interested in."

A University of Swag直播 graduate is raising money for girls’ football through a company she started while studying for her Bachelor’s degree.

Grace Vella, 22 and originally from Skelmersdale in West Lancashire, graduated on Tuesday (16 July) from Swag直播’s . She leaves not only with a First Class honours degree in Psychology, but also at the head of a new company that aims to empower and engage women and girls in football.

Started by Grace in her third year, while she was on placement with a charity supporting young homeless people, was launched at the annual Skem Athletic Tournament in 2018. Through the sale of female-oriented football merchandise, MissKick is able to fund grassroots girls’ football teams, with over £500 raised so far.

As a student of Swag直播, Grace was eligible to take part in , a student start-up programme based in Greater Swag直播. After a selection process in which she had to pitch her idea, Grace was one of 15 finalists from 125 applicants. Through the programme, she was given funding, support and office space for six months, something she says supported her in establishing MissKick.

Football has always formed a large part of Grace’s life. As a child, she played for her local team, before signing with Liverpool at 13 years old. At 18, she moved to Swag直播 City, and while she then left to pursue her degree in Psychology, she remains heavily involved in the sport, currently playing for Chorley FC.

One of her long-term goals for MissKick is to challenge the perception that football is a sport “just for boys”, something she came up against growing up. The recent surge of popularity around the FIFA Women’s World Cup has encouraged Grace that the women’s game is being noticed and taken seriously. As she points out, viewing figures for the semi-final game between England and the USA beat those of the men’s game’s Champions League final earlier this year.

“Swag直播 will always hold a special place in my heart. I’d never known anything other than Skelmersdale, so moving to a city like Swag直播 was a big transition. I’ve the best memories, and walking away with my first class degree is all that I’ve ever wanted. The University were super supportive of MissKick. I can’t thank my Academic Advisor, Alison, enough for the support she has given me.”

Needless to say, Grace’s achievements during her time at Swag直播 have not gone unnoticed. Alison Fisher, Programme Director of BSc Psychology at the University, complimented the “outstanding” student for her accomplishments so far, adding: “Grace’s hard work, determination and her drive to improve the lives of others embodies what it means to be a Swag直播 graduate; we are incredibly proud to have her as a member of our alumni community.”

After graduating, Grace plans to focus on MissKick. She said: “Studying at university and trying to work on my business has been super tough! So I am excited to be able to have the time to focus on just the one thing. I’d never say never to coming back to do a Masters, however, for the meantime, I feel the best option is to put all my energy into MissKick, as I want to be able to give myself the best opportunity for this to work.”

Grace shares regular updates on MissKick’s events and achievements through the , as well as via , and Twitter .

Two brothers, who have both graduated from Swag直播, are aiming to build on their world-leading rankings in basketball by being selected for the Irish 2020/2024 Olympic team.

Twins Cian and Tadhg Hickey, 23, from County Donegal in Ireland, are both LLB students graduating from Swag直播 this summer. The brothers are also Sport Scholarship students who have been described as ‘the heart and soul’ of the carrying out a range of officer roles as well as voluntary coaching in the community.

In the 5 vs 5 traditional format of basketball they have represented Ireland at under 18 and the UK Select under 23 squads at International level, whilst attending one of the best academies in England - Myerscough College. They have both played top flight Men’s Basketball in England, securing the prestigious BUCS Division 1 title earlier this month. Now the siblings have set their sights on the Olympics.

Tadhg said of their Olympic selection target: “As we continue to achieve international success and recognition throughout the 3x3 community, we compete against the best in the world and our sights are now set on the FIBA 3x3 professional tour and Olympic selection. As the only team in the world made up of three brothers, Séamus Hickey being our final teammate, we are excited to show what we can do.”

The past 12 months have seen the Hickey twins travel across the globe whilst balancing their studies competing against NBA and professional standard players, winning titles and gaining increasing profile-currently ranked the number one team in Ireland. After success in Holland and Germany they are targeting 2020 and 2024 Olympic selection.

Speaking about his time at the University Cian said: “Swag直播 has been amazing and we’ve thoroughly enjoyed our time at the University representing PURPLE&PROUD. We have balanced our academic studies, work and sporting goals while self-funding our 3x3 ventures thus far. As we push forward as international athletes and aspire for Olympic selection, we are seeking sponsorship that will allow us the opportunity to play in higher profile tournaments more consistently throughout the world.”

Cian and Tadhg were speakers at the Future Champions Breakfast Event held earlier this year, and were jointly awarded the prestigious Sports Man of the year accolades at the annual Sports Awards.

A University of Swag直播 graduate is leaving with a First Class degree, after juggling academic studies with an elite level para-swimming career.

Rosie Bancroft, 24, originally from Oxford, graduated on Tuesday from Swag直播’s with a First Class Honours degree in Zoology. But that’s not all she’s accomplished in her time at the University; she’s also an international athlete who’s coached for Swag直播’s swimming team, and is now starting a new job as part of the University’s sports department.

Starting at a young age, Rosie has always loved being in the water. “Swimming,” she says, “was a sport in which I never felt held back at all by my leg” (Rosie has been missing her right leg since birth, and wears a prosthetic). She trained for the City of Oxford team before beginning her degree, which was initially based at the University of Glasgow. After a year there, Rosie was offered a place to train at the in Swag直播, having been selected for the world class pathway program during her A-levels.

Her passion for biology began equally early. “When I was a teenager I loved biology at school”, says Rosie, “[and] I always knew I wanted to do a course related to animals.” Balancing a zoology degree with an international sports career, as well as working part time and volunteering with animals, has been hard work. “When I was swimming I doing up to ten 2-hour swims a week and 3 gym sessions. I was very tired a lot of the time but as I was passionate about everything I was working towards I felt motivated. And it all payed off in the end!”

“The University has been so supportive the whole time I’ve been here. For example, when I was training in Thailand on a Team GB camp I missed one of my exams, and my lecturer wrote me my own exam so that I could sit it when I got back. I found that a lot of the staff at the University went out of their way for me whilst I was here.”

Now, Rosie is bringing her experience as the head coach of the University’s swim team into her new role as a Sports Sabbatical Officer, heading up the Executive Committee which works alongside the sports department and has input into decision making and events organising. This is a full-time, one year post, after which she hopes to utilise her degree through working in wildlife conservation project management.

As she comes to the end of her studies, Rosie has this advice for students just starting out; “Being part of the university swim team has been a highlight of my time at university and I would definitely recommend trying out different sports or societies. It’s a great way to meet people and adds a lot to your time at university!”

Two Swag直播-based student athletes have won prizes at the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) Star Awards, at a ceremony in London.

The Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) is a Sport England-funded partnership between talented athletes, education institutions and national governing bodies of sport. Swag直播 is one of 35 institutions who provide a support package to ‘dual career’ athletes, enabling them to balance their sports with their studies.

The Athlete of the Year award went to second year Medicine student and netball player Amy Carter. She has had an extremely successful season balancing her studies alongside her commitments as part of the England Netball Futures programme, the 2019 Vitality Superleague Champions team, Swag直播 Thunder, and playing University Netball team who compete in the British and Universities Colleges Sport (BUCS) Premier division.“I am very excited and pleased to have won this award,” said Amy.

"Receiving support from TASS for the previous 6 years has been crucial in my development as a dual career athlete. It has provided me with my first opportunity to do strength and conditioning, the lifestyle support has had a huge impact allowing me to balance sport and education successfully, and the medical insurance is vital but luckily hasn’t been needed yet.

"I’d like to say thank you to all those involved in TASS, and it was interesting at the awards night to see all the people who work behind the scenes."

The Most Determined Athlete Award went to Swag直播-based Open University student and Boccia Player, Rafael Young. New to TASS this year, he had his most successful season yet, rising to fifth in the national rankings. He competed in the England Nationals Championships for the first time in May, and came fourth - smashing his target of winning one match by winning three - and was the only semi-finalist who is not a current member of the England Squad.

“I'm very proud to win this award,” said Rafael. “The entire year has been a shining example of what is possible with the right support. Ten years ago I didn't know that people with severe impairments - let alone those with high level care needs - could even participate in competitive sport at all, and now here I am!”

The Purple Wave raises more than 拢11k for University causes /about/news/the-purple-wave-raises-more-than-11k-for-university-causes/ /about/news/the-purple-wave-raises-more-than-11k-for-university-causes/336960

How are your legs? Recovered yet? It’s been almost a week since the University’s now legendary took to the streets of Swag直播 once more for the city’s 10k and half-marathon versions of the .

While those who took part have been celebrating, recovering and already signing up for next year, our statisticians have been beavering away and the numbers are finally in. All together more than 1600 people ran the 10k and half-marathon distance.

The biggest number is the total distance travelled by all our Purple Wave runners. Including their tracked training our runners ran a grand total of 63,290.55km…that’s enough to travel to Singapore and back.

The seconded highest (but perhaps most impressive) number has to be £11,153.17 raised by 107 runners for the University's Undergraduate Access Scholarships, International Equity and Merit Scholarships and at the University.

James Marenghi, Sport Participation Manager at , said: "We were delighted to see such a large number of University students, staff and alumni walking, jogging and running for such a variety of positive reasons.

“The Purple Wave has really brought together and inspired the University community to collectively raise funds for some great causes and support healthy and happy lifestyles."

Despite doing “no training” and having “aching bones” prior to the event (his ), on the day our Chancellor, Lemn Sissay, ran the 10k in a respectable 1:16:38.

However, our fastest runners racked-up some amazing times:

 • Female 10k – Hannah Stroud (37:04)
 • Male 10k – Arlo Ludewick (33:50)
 • Female ½ marathon - Ella Petley (1:38:10)
 • Male ½ marathon - James Bannister (1:23:50)

If that sounds too quick for you and even puts you off taking part, don’t worry, this year 53 walkers walked the event for the first time. Now there is no excuse not to take part next year!

For those who want to relive the glories and for those who simply couldn’t make it on the day, you can watch the BBC’s coverage on . The Purlple Wave features from around 1hr 51m mark and includes an interview with Lemn himself.

James added: “We want to thank everyone who took part and are looking at how we can develop Purple Wave opportunities broader than running in the near future, so watch this space!”

A runner based at Swag直播 is almost a third of the way to completing his epic challenge of running 5km every day for a year.

Graham Holland – who is raising cash for Alzheimer’s Research UK – will reaches day 100, passing the 650km mark on 10 April.

He will also done the famous Purple shirt in the Great Swag直播 Run on May 19 – or day 139.

The University will have its own start time at the internationally renowned 10k run, with a Purple Wave of runners wearing the purple technical running t-shirts they receive on registration.

The eLearning support officer based at the University of Swag直播 Library will have run in excess of 1,825 km or 1,134 miles when he finishes on January 1, 2020.

He is spurred on by the desire to help his mum Eileen who was diagnosed with early onset dementia in 2018.

He said: “After my mum’s diagnosis I decided I wanted to do something to help Alzheimer’s Research UK which is doing great work on researching the causes, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of this disease.

“Dementia is such a terrible thing to happen to someone - and when it’s someone close to you, it’s particularly hard.

“And as ARUK is a partner charity for parkrun UK it made sense for me to support them.”

Graham began running outdoors after colleagues at the library encouraged him to run at lunchtime and he went from strength to strength.

In no time he’d taken part in UMRun’s monthly Rundezvous scheme - where staff members run to work for a free breakfast – and became a regular in his local parkrun clocking a PB of just over 21 minutes for 5K.

And when he joined the Purple Wave for the first time in 2018 it was an easy decision for him to repeat the effort as part of his 365 day challenge.

He added: “Eight years ago I was overweight and unfit. But At 49, I’m now the fittest I’ve even been and that’s a testament to running.

“There’s something inspirational about running with other people which is why parkrun is so good and which is why I loved the Great Swag直播 run: you’re cheered the whole way which is amazing.

“Running is a release from whatever is going on at home. I listen to music or use the time to think. That’s why everyone should give it a go.”

Last year, 2,283 people donned the famous purple shirt to form their own Purple Wave in the race around Central Swag直播.

Many students, staff and alumni have joined the Purple Wave in previous years, and run to raise money to support local young people access a world class education at Swag直播.

Runners who agree to fundraise for The University’s acclaimed Undergraduate Access Scholarship will be able to run for free.

Runners will also be able to choose to fundraise for Equity and Merit Scholarships or medical research.

Graham will meet outside the Alan Gilbert Learning Commons at 12.10pm for a 12:15pm start. You can do one 2.5k loop or the full 5k

University of Swag直播 Chancellor Lemn Sissay has recorded a series of videos encouraging student and staff take part in the Great Swag直播 Run – and join the University’s Purple Wave

For the fourth year in a row, hundreds of runners from the University - including Sissay - are expected to take part in The Simply Health Great Swag直播 Run - Europe’s largest race over 10km.

The internationally renowned 10k race will be staged for the 17th time, with the day also including a half marathon in the heart of the city on 19 May.

Last year, 2,283 people donned the famous purple shirt to form their own Purple Wave in the race around Central Swag直播.

In the videos Sissay advises less experienced runners training for the race not to jump in but start with start with slow runs or jogs

And in another, he advises runners to mix up their location to see different views of wherever they live.

“This the largest higher education running wave across the entire country. It helps you, it helps your physical health, and it helps your mental wellbeing,” he says

“It helps you help yourself and feel better in yourself. Then the people around you are going to feel better too.”

By entering Purple Wavers will run, walk or jog 30,000km across the world and reach Swag直播’s international centre in Singapore.

And the good news is that the live tracker shows the runners are 80% of the way there, journeying through various global locations showing off some of the social responsibility work the University delivers.

University staff will be entitled to a free Purple Wave registration if they fundraise a minimum of £100 for scholarships for local disadvantaged students or students from developing countries, or for breakthroughs in medical research at the University.

Runners of the Purple Wave 2018 supported Swag直播’s flagship widening participation scheme, Swag直播 Access Programme (MAP), by fully funding the first ever Purple Wave Undergraduate Access Scholar.

Premier League: how English football's top flight favours fans of London clubs /about/news/premier-league-how-english-footballs-top-flight-favours-fans-of-london-clubs/ /about/news/premier-league-how-english-footballs-top-flight-favours-fans-of-london-clubs/327896, and ,

The English Premier League (EPL) is the most in the world and one of the most of any kind. But the benefits may be relatively skewed towards people who live in London. Not only has the UK capital had more clubs per fan in the EPL than any other region since the league was created in the 1992/93 season, but their fans have to pay less to travel to see their clubs play away matches.

Over the 26 years the league has been in operation, the number of EPL clubs based in London has remained relatively stable at approximately six. Meanwhile, the number of clubs from different regions has fluctuated. The largest reduction was observed in the north of England where the number of EPL clubs fell from ten out of 20 in 1995/96 (when the EPL was reduced from 22 to 20) to seven out of 20 in 2018/19. There was large variation in participation from teams in the Midlands or the east of England and a small increase in the number of clubs from the south and Wales, with the participation of Brighton & Hove Albion FC, AFC Bournemouth and Cardiff City in 2018/19.

If you dig deeper, you can see that the northwest and, especially, Yorkshire & Humber are the biggest losers over time (Figure 2) – although Leeds United and Sheffield United are currently sitting pretty on the Championship (the second tier of English football) table and may well join the EPL in 2019/20. This implies that there may be stronger regional representation, with Huddersfield (Yorkshire) and Fulham (London) looking destined for relegation to the Championship.

If you adjust this calculation for population size (assuming one club per approximately 2.5m people – distributing fairly 20 clubs across around 51m people), the north of England and London were – and still are – the only two regions punching above their weight. But you can also see a change over time as London has surpassed the north in terms of “over-representation” of clubs from the region. The north’s losses have benefited the south and Wales. Once again, drilling down into lower level regions, it becomes clear that the north-west is the only region comparable to London (Figure 3).

For example, in the 2018/19 EPL season, there were six clubs from London (“observed”) and based on a population around 8,200,000 people from the 2011 Census we would expect around three clubs (“expected”). Meanwhile the north-west of England has a population of around 7.5m so, again, you would expect around three clubs – but there are five in the EPL.

Strain of the train

We decided to work out how much things were skewed in favour of London-based clubs and their fans. We calculated how much it costs for fans to follow their clubs on all away EPL fixtures, picking an arbitrary date: Saturday November 3, 2018. We used the most common kick-off time of 3pm and obtained rail and car travel estimates from Google maps and the national rail enquiries website. Unsurprisingly, following Newcastle United, in the northeast, was the most expensive choice – each committed Geordie had to spend around £2,500 on rail fares to attend all of the club’s away matches.

Bournemouth, on the south coast of England, Cardiff City in Wales and Huddersfield Town in Yorkshire were next in line – their fans had to spend more than £1,700. At the other end of the scale, fans of London clubs such as Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal faced an average cost of around £1,000. Fans of Liverpool and Swag直播 clubs had to spend around £1,400 and £1,200, respectively.

In total, rail fares for Newcastle United fans to attend all 19 away matches were in excess of £6.5m (accounting for away fan capacity and assuming sellout crowds). This is a clear outlier, reflecting Newcastle’s remoteness in relation to other clubs – although rail travel time for Novocastrians was better than expected. This at least reflects good services and connections – better than for Bournemouth, Cardiff and Burnley, for example, considering the distances.

Rail costs per mile further demonstrate a variation – Leicester fans, in particular, have the right to feel particularly aggrieved, with cost per mile travelled to or from London being 0.58p and to or from everywhere else 0.52p (averages for all other cities/towns, excluding London, were 0.43p and 0.47p, respectively).

Interesting point: for Bournemouth and Southampton fans, a return train ticket to London is slightly more expensive than for London-based fans travelling in the opposite direction.

In reality, all these costs are underestimates, since televised matches are played at times that make the lives of travelling fans very difficult – it may be impossible to get a direct train and an overnight stay may be essential, further adding to the costs. And these additional costs are likely to be higher for non-London supporters, since services outside London tend to be less frequent, while overnight stays in London are more expensive.

Level playing field

It becomes evident that football fans have to bear a disproportional cost in time and money, supporting an industry that makes massive profits. So, what can be done? Travelling fans are effectively sports “visitors” and should be treated with reciprocal respect, with more consideration given to televised matches and the distances fans have to travel.

The EPL could also acknowledge the travelling costs for away fans and offer financial support to clubs in a similar way to how broadcast and central income is distributed. This would allow each club to consider a ticket pricing strategy for its own fans or support travelling arrangements. Perhaps clubs could consider selling a bundle product which would include both match and rail ticket. Alternatively (or in addition), the government or football institutions could negotiate fairer “fixed” rail prices.

But it’s not all down to geography, as infrastructure also plays its part. London is at the centre of the biggest sports investments which have made the capital the natural host for national football events. It seems unfair that finals and FA Cup semi-finals and finals are hosted in London.

Wembley, the “headquarters” of English football, has historically been an integral part of the game in England and is recognised as a global football trademark. But always having cup finals there increases the time and expense for supporters of non-London clubs that are successful in these competitions. Perhaps the region of the finalists should be considered before a venue was decided.

This imbalance is a problem for the EPL as it may have implications for its attractiveness and for generating revenue overall. And, as the so-called “people’s sport”, it’s surely a problem that this emphasis in favour of London and London-based clubs makes life harder for fans with less money to travel to see their clubs play.

Football is one of the most loved sports in the UK and the world, bringing together families and friends over a number of generations. It’s a societal link of togetherness. It shouldn’t give an unfair advantage to London or lead loyal supporters to poverty.

Sport Participation Manager James Marenghi said: “I am absolutely delighted with the number of people who took part which massively exceeded our initial target.

“We were blessed with glorious weather and had a fantastic turnout; a great time was had by all.

“If you enjoyed the event, then you will love the Great Swag直播 10K Run, so we would encourage everyone to sign up to be part of our unique Purple Wave in May!’

Last year, 2,283 people donned the famous purple shirt to form their own Purple Wave in the race around Central Swag直播.

And by adding kilometres to a live tracker, Purple Wave runners are already half way through the 30,000 km journey to Swag直播’s international centre in Singapore.

The journey has taken in countries including Uganda where manchester academics are Investigating provision of healthcare and the application of communication technologies for environmental sensor networks.

And in Urban Tanzania, manchester experts are researching youth, poverty and inequality through the Motorbike taxi savings and employment scheme.

Many students, staff and alumni join the Purple Wave to raise money for local young people to access a world class education at Swag直播.

Student runners who fundraise for the University’s undergraduate scholarships which help students from more disadvantaged communities , postgraduate scholarships for students from developing countries or breakthroughs in medical research will be able to run for free. University staff and alumni can also register for free when they commit to raising £100 for one of the causes.

Vicky Ackerley, Head of Sport at Swag直播 said: “Over these four years, the Great Swag直播 Run has profoundly shown that most people can take part in active sport and the majority will derive great benefit to their physical and mental wellbeing.

“Along with other the good causes, some of the runners will be raising cash for The University’s acclaimed Undergraduate Access Scholarship scheme support’s bright young people who come from the most deprived parts of Greater Swag直播.

“So many of our brilliant staff, students and alumni inspire and encourage others to join them.

“It’s a fantastic achievement to consistently bring at hundreds of people to this great event and because of that we are currently the only organisation to have our very own starting wave.

“You don’t have to be a great athlete to join the purple wave. Just a belief in yourself and the people around you.”

Registrations are now open for the hundreds of University of Swag直播 staff, students and alumni who will be joining Europe’s largest race over 10km.

For the fourth year in a row, runners from the University - this year including its Chancellor Lemn Sissay - are expected to take part in The Simply Health Great Swag直播 Run.

The internationally renowned 10k race will be staged for the 17th time, with the day also including a half marathon in the heart of the city on 19 May.

Last year, 2,283 people donned the famous purple shirt to form their own Purple Wave in the race around Central Swag直播.

And this year, there’s a boost for people who want to get into running but need that little extra bit of confidence.

For the first time ever, Swag直播 and Swag直播 Metropolitan University, in partnership with the Great Run Company are organising a 2K and 5K run on 27 February at Platt Fields Park.

By entering one of the events, the Purple Wave will run, walk or jog 30,000km across the world and reach Swag直播’s international centre in Singapore.

Runners taking part in one or more of the events will be add kilometres to a live tracker that will journey through various global locations showing off some of the social responsibility work the University delivers.

Lemn Sissay said: “Being active is not only great for your physical health but it’s brilliant for your mental wellbeing, and – believe me – it’ll make you feel good and it’ll make the people around u feel good too.

“This is the biggest Higher Education running wave across the entire country. It helps motivate you from the inside out – it helps you with your mental health and your physical wellbeing – it helps you help yourself. So run!”

Vicky Ackerley, Head of Sport at Swag直播 said: “Over these four years, the Great Swag直播 Run has profoundly shown that most people can take part in active sport and the majority will derive great benefit to their physical and mental wellbeing.

“You don’t have to be a great athlete to join the purple wave. Just a belief in yourself and the people around you.”

‘Be Active’ is one of the University’s ‘Six ways to wellbeing’ campaigns this year, encouraging staff to make positive changes to keep feeling good and living well.

Sarah Littlejohn, Head of Counselling and Mental Health Service at Swag直播 said: “Exercise isn’t just about keeping fit and more and more evidence shows that physical activity can help us think and feel positively.

“We urge everyone to find a form of physical activity that fits with their lifestyle and which is enjoyable. Running is just one of them!”

This year, University Sport team is proactively supporting a walking group through all the events. That’s good news for member of staff Cardy Camara, who will be walking the course, despite suffering from debilitating arthritis in her feet.

Cardy will also be running in memory of her brother Gerry Law, who died of pancreatic cancer died 2 years ago.

The 59-year-old who suffers from osteoarthritis, is in constant pain when she trains. “Osteoarthritis is very painful and I have it in my hands too but that doesn’t deter me from taking part in the Purple Wave.

“The doctors first thought I’d fractured a bone in my foot it was so bad. Even though I didn’t run the course, walking it felt like a huge achievement for me last year. Can hardly wait to be there again!”

“Our runners had a fantastic time and we are delighted to have raised so much cash for so many important causes, including the University’s brilliant undergraduate access programme.

“It’s clear the project has inspired our students, staff and alumni to get into sport participation and look after their physical and mental health.

“The money is still coming in so thanks to all those people who gave so generously."

He added: “There’s no doubt that our University of Swag直播 runners played a huge part in making this fabulous event even better than last year.

“I’d like to thank everyone who took part, and helped make the day so special. We’ll definitely be back in 2019!”

Huge numbers of University of Swag直播 staff, students and alumni have registered for the as part of a Purple Wave on May 20.

A final count of 2,283 people will be donning the University’s purple shirt to take part in the 10k race around Central Swag直播.

Swag直播 will have its own start time, with a Purple Wave of runners wearing the technical running t-shirts they receive on registration.

The team have been enlisting the help of superstar, Athletics legend Mo Farah who urged everyone from the University to sign up for the run in March.

Along with other the good causes, some of the runners will be raising cash for The University’s acclaimed Undergraduate Access Scholarship scheme support’s bright young people who come from the most deprived parts of Greater Swag直播.

The internationally renowned 10k run, the largest in Europe, will be staged for the 16th time, with the day also including a half marathon in the heart of the city.

Among the runners will be member of staff Cardy Camara, who is taking part despite suffering from debilitating arthritis in her feet.

Cardy will also be running in memory of her brother Jerry Law, who died of pancreatic cancer in January this year.

The 50-year-old is in pain constant pain when she trains. “OA is very painful and I have OA in my hands too. The doctors first thought I’d fractured a bone in my foot it was so bad.

“But it’s so important to me; that’s why I do it.”

And second year physics student Imogen Davies, whose hole in her heart was fixed by surgeons aged 3 months, will also take part one year on from her second open heart surgery.

She said: “It does not matter how slow you go. Do it for yourself and the opportunities you will be able to take up because of it. Running and exercise is amazing. It’s so good for your physical and mental health.”

Head of Head of Sport Vicky Ackerley said: “In just three years the Purple Wave has gone from a crazy idea to an established annual mass participation event for Swag直播 community.

“We are currently the only organisation to have our very own starting wave, and hold the record for the largest entry.

“Whether a seasoned runner, or a complete beginner looking to improve your health and wellbeing, this event provides the opportunity to be part of something really special and raise the profile of our University.”

A University of Swag直播 administrator is to break the pain barrier to take part in the on May 20.

Cardy Camara who works for Well North is to join the 2,200 staff, students and alumni who have registered with the University to take part in the 10k race, while suffering from debilitating arthritis in her feet

She will also be taking part in memory of her brother Gerry Law, who died of pancreatic cancer in January last year.

The 10k run - the nation's most popular - takes place on the streets of Central Swag直播.

The University will have its own start time, with runners - and run/walkers like Cardy - wearing the purple technical running t-shirts they receive on registration.

“One of my colleagues signed up to the purple wave two years ago. She had never run before and she inspired me to run the 10k with her,” she said.

“While I was training my feet started hurting- but I put it down to the running, though was later diagnosed with osteoarthritis. So running is very painful,” she said.

The 59-year-old is in constant pain when she trains. “OA is very painful and I have OA in my hands too. The doctors first thought I’d fractured a bone in my foot it was so bad.

“But it’s so important to me; that’s why I do it.”

When a note was went to her about the University of Swag直播 - a walking group for students, staff and the public- she thought she’d give it a go again.

The group has helped her realise her dream of taking part in the Purple Wave for a second time.

But there will also be a note of sadness to the day.

She said: “My brother Gerry was taken from me much too early. He was a documentary film cameraman and had worked with many famous people including Eric Cantona and Ewan McGregor. But he was most interested in documenting the lives of ordinary people.

“He was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer in the summer of 2016, had surgery in October and lost his battle with the disease in Jan 2017.

“He was a keen cyclist- such a fit man and was so pleased about my running.”

“Last summer I ran the 10k in his memory to raise money for the Maggie’s charity near the Christie Hospital which provides an incredible sanctuary for people, affected by cancer.

This year I am hoping to raise money for Maggie’s Swag直播 and Pancreatic Cancer Action.

“I am also a trained mindfulness practitioner and have given a session to patients and relatives at Maggie’s.”

She added: “Running is still very important to me: it helps me clear my head and gives me the opportunity to be mindful.

“It is my special time with for me and I have great memories of my brother and will of course be thinking about him and I’m looking forward to what will be a be a lovely experience.

“The more I can raise awareness about pancreatic cancer the better.”

A second year physics student, whose hole in her heart was fixed by surgeons aged 3 months, will participate in Swag直播’s Purple Wave one year on from her second open heart surgery.

Imogen Davies, from Birmingham, will complete the 10k race as part of the , despite her numerous health problems.

The inspirational 21-year-old will join more than 2000 staff, students and alumni to have registered for the race as part of Swag直播’s Purple wave on May 20.

The organisers are bidding to beat last year’s record-breaking total of 2,500 runners, who took part in the 10k run through Central Swag直播.

The University will have its own start time, with runners - and run/walkers like Imogen- wearing the purple technical running t-shirts they receive on registration.

She said: “For me, the point is not running the whole way. In fact, I find it quite difficult, which is why I use a combination of running and walking. But nevertheless, I think it will take me 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 20 to get around.”

The student, who trains three times a week up to an impressive 5 miles each session, is not new to sport and fitness.

She said: “For me keeping fit is important because allows you experience things you would not be able to otherwise, like hiking down the Grand Canyon.

“Helicopters are no longer allowed to fly down to the Colorado River, so without being physically able to hike the south face of the Grand Canyon, I would never have comprehended the true size of the river.”

At school, she was a keen swimmer, competing in the breaststroke and coming third in the Worcester County Age Group Championships aged 14.

Shortly after giving up swimming, she decided to run/walk the Birmingham Half marathon in 2014, raising money for the Adult Congenital Heart unit at Birmingham Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

She finished in an amazing three hours. And in the same year she completed her Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award.

She added: “It does not always come easily. At the time of my Duke of Edinburgh expedition, my heart valve was severely leaky and my ventricle enlarged. I had to carry 15 kilos over some of the highest mountains in Snowdonia.

“I was the slowest in our group. So slow we were branded the ‘slowest group ever’ by our assessor. But I did it. On another occasion we cancelled a family trip that had planned hikes around the Himalayan basin and to Everest Base Camp .”

Her advice to others who want to take part: “It does not matter how slow you go. Do it for yourself and the opportunities you will be able to take up because of it. Running and exercise is amazing. It’s so good for your physical and mental health.”

Two runners have extra special reasons why they are joining the 2000 people who have already registered to take part the on 20 May.

Student Recruitment Assistant Lucy Finnigan and PhD student Biranche Tandon will join staff, students and alumni who have registered to be part of Swag直播’s Purple wave.

Lucy, 35, will be running in memory of her daughter Grace who was born sleeping two years ago.

And Biranche, 25 will be back on the road again after breaking his ankle in a serious footballing injury

The organisers are bidding to beat last year’s record-breaking total of 2,500 runners, who took part in the 10k run through Central Swag直播.

The University will have its own start time, with runners - and run/walkers - wearing the purple technical running t-shirts they receive on registration.

After Lucy lost her daughter two years ago, she was later fortunate enough to have a healthy baby girl called Niamh just over a year afterwards - with the help of NHS obstetrician Dr Alex Heazell, who is also a senior clinical Lecturer at the University.

She’s been training seriously for three months – the first time she’s been able to do any serious exercise after two pregnancies in two years.

She said: “Running grounds me; it’s immensely important and is a powerful coping mechanism. It gives me an opportunity to think solely about Grace so it’s almost as if it’s my special time with her.

“My husband Dermot has been a huge support: he’s a runner himself and will be also taking part in the race.

“I’ve raised money in the past for SANDS - Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Charity. I’m not running for them this time - but it’s good to raise awareness of the great work they do.”

Biranche Tandon from Northern India, studying biomedical materials, needed surgery after he broke his ankle playing football.

The sports mad PhD researcher needed a 10-day stay in hospital after surgeons fixed a plate to his fibula bone with screws.

It took him 3 months to get back on to his feet- but 11 months later, he’ll be taking part in the Purple wave.

He said: “I just love running it keeps me going and I can hardly wait until 20 May. It’s going to be a fantastic day.

“If you have a bad day – and things don’t go so well, just getting out and going for a run can make you feel better.

“Not being able to walk was difficult- but it’s not deterred me. I got there in the end and I encourage everyone to get out and get active.

“10k is not such a huge distance; most people will be able to achieve it I think: I hope eventually to run over a half marathon distance.”

Today marks the launch of FA Girls’ Football Week (Monday 23 – Sunday 29 April), with activities taking place across Swag直播. The nationwide initiative will give girls aged 5 – 11 the opportunity to play football, inspired by some iconic Disney characters.

As part of the week, Swag直播 is to host an event on Wednesday (25 April) for local primary schools at the Armitage Sports Centre where over 100 girls will take part in activities led by student volunteers from the UoM Women’s Football Club and Sports Volunteer Scheme. It will be followed by the launch of the Wildcats Girls’ Football Centre being delivered in partnership with Vipers JFC, starting on Saturday 28 April at 9:15 at the Armitage Sports Centre.

The week aims to inspire girls across all levels of ability to play football and get active, with an added sprinkle of Disney magic and storytelling. Sessions delivered by FA approved organisations will provide an introduction to the fundamentals of football, build key social skills and offer fun team-building exercises.

Girls of all ages are encouraged to sign up to Girls’ Football Week with a variety of sessions on offer.

The football resources created by The FA include Disney-inspired drills featuring strong, determined and mould-breaking characters, who take their destiny into their own hands and follow their dreams, including Rapunzel from Disney’s Tangled, Moana from Disney’s Moana, and Judy Hopps from Disney’s Zootropolis. The drills will feature in the packs being distributed to schools, clubs and homes, aiming to inspire girls to try football, meet new friends and stay active, as well as to empower girls and build their self-confidence.

As well as getting the chance to play, girls who sign-up to take part will be provided with an official FA and Disney participation certificate and a 20 per cent discount voucher to use in Disney stores.

Martin Cropper, from Swag直播's Sport Football Development Centre, said: “As a University Grassroots Football Hub we have made it one of our key agendas to grow women’s and girls’ football both in the institution and in the local community. Girls’ Football Week is another fantastic opportunity for us to achieve this through a collaborative approach with Swag直播 FA, schools and local community clubs and we are excited to deliver an exciting event with a clear pathway to further participation opportunities. We hope that all the participants will have a great experience and be inspired by our students to get involved in regular football!”

Kelly Simmons, FA Participation and Development Director, added: “Girls’ Football Week is focused on inspiring a new generation of girls to get active and fall in love with football. Football can offer these girls so much; from sheer enjoyment, to encouraging a healthy lifestyle and making friends. Girls’ Football Week is a central part of our plans – via The Gameplan for Growth - to double the number of females playing the game by 2020.”

To launch the week, Disney and The FA brought to life the stories of three aspiring players from Coalville Town Football Club in a short film, showing how they have taken inspiration on the pitch from the bold and adventurous Disney characters. Liverpool FC鈥檚 Mohamed Salah鈥檚 goal celebrations: a guide to British Muslimness /about/news/liverpool-mohamed-salahs-goal-celebrations-guide-british-muslimness/ /about/news/liverpool-mohamed-salahs-goal-celebrations-guide-british-muslimness/269735Liverpool FC’s Egyptian-born forward Mohamed Salah is currently one of the Premier League’s most prolific goalscorers. This, his debut season with Liverpool, has seen Salah earn multiple accolades: most left-footed goals scored in a Premier League season, second-fastest player in Liverpool’s history to reach 30 goals, one of the top ten goalscorers in Europe, and 2017 African Footballer of the Year.

He shows no signs of lowering his goal tally as the season goes on, with commentator and former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher Salah as a strong contender for another Player of the Year award. In a league that is regularly touted as so open that any team can win, lose, or draw against any other, unpredictability is the name of the game. Yet this season, Salah’s consistent goalscoring record seems to buck that trend. Salah’s counterattacking form was of particular concern for Swag直播 United when they played Liverpool on March 10, as they sat deep and defended against the Merseyside club for much of the match.

Beautiful though they are to watch, what I find most interesting about Salah’s goals are his celebrations and their reception. Because consistently, Salah does two things after scoring. First, he hugs his teammates, a typical response. But then, he , the Islamic act of prostration.

Sujood normally occurs twice in every section of salaat – a word commonly mistranslated as prayer (following its Arabic root, salaat is better translated as “connection”). A Muslim who performs salaat the requisite five times daily finds themself in sujood 34 times each day. In Islamic thought, sujood is perceived of as the physically lowest, but spiritually highest, position a person can take. Salah’s performance of sujood outside of salaat, then, is a specific expression of gratitude for goals scored.

Though Premier League footballers are Muslim, Salah is the only one who regularly prostrates on the pitch.

Getting goals

Liverpool fans have taken note. After his recent Champions League goal against the Portuguese side Porto in Liverpool’s 5-0 victory, praising him:

Mo Sa-la-la-la-lah, Mo Sa-la-la-la-lah
If he’s good enough for you he’s good enough for me.
If he scores another few then I’ll be Muslim too.
If he’s good enough for you he’s good enough for me.
He’s sitting in the mosque that’s where I wanna be.

The chant, which is a rewrite of lyrics from the 1996 song by British power pop rock trio, Dodgy, quickly went viral on Twitter and YouTube. News outlets including and laud the chant as a demonstration of inclusivity. It is catchy, for sure. But is it inclusive? It’s not quite that simple.

Salah’s work and the chant itself fit squarely into two common narratives: that of the good Muslim/bad Muslim; and the good immigrant. Articulated by , among others, portrays the “good” as those who appease society by accepting majority values and customs, while the “bad” are those who resist it religiously, culturally, or politically.

Being good

The “good” Muslim is the , who stopped worshippers from beating up a terrorist named Darren Osborne after he drove a van into a crowd during Ramadan 2017. The “bad” Muslim is the , who refused to allow police to search his laptop and mobile phone under Schedule 7 powers granted to the British government by the Terrorism Act.

This binary maps onto those immigrants who are perceived of as “good”. In his note that opens , editor Nikesh Shukla references writer Musa Okwonga when arguing:

The biggest burden facing people of colour in this country is that society deems us bad immigrants – job-stealers, benefit-scroungers, girlfriend-thieves, refugees – until we cross over in their consciousness, through popular culture, winning races, baking good cakes, being conscientious doctors, to become good immigrants.

Salah is one of those good immigrants.

And here is the paradox of his sujood. Being praised by non-Muslim Liverpool supporters as “good” is positive, of course. But it is conditional. The chant makes clear that it is only “if” Salah continues to score goals that his displays of Muslimness will be accepted. It is only “if” he remains good that he will continue to be worshipped by them. It is only “if” he furthers his professional excellence that opinions about Islam may shift.

Addictive as it is, the chant flies in the face of spoken word poet Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khan’s that society move beyond loving the Muslim who excels in athletics or bakery to include those who “don’t offer our homes or free taxi rides after the event” and are “wretched, suicidal, naked, and contributing nothing”. The double-edged sword of Salah’s sujood is that it is tied to his excellence on the field.

If he stops scoring, he will stop performing sujood. As a result, fans will love him – and Islam – a little less.

Swag直播 has launched this year’s Purple Wave with a bid to register as many runners as possible for the on 20 May.

Members of the University of Swag直播 Student Union’s , gathered together in the University’s Samuel Alexander building to celebrate the official launch of the registration process.

They were joined by University of Swag直播 student and triple jumper Naomi Ogbeta, and staff member Mike Addelman.

Naomi is a politics and quantitative methods student who beat off the best in the UK at the Spar British Athletics Indoor Championships this month.

Mike- a media officer- is running with a mechanical heart valve and has had three bouts of surgery in the past 14 months.

The internationally renowned 10k run will be staged for the 16th time, with the day also including a half marathon in the heart of the city.

The University will have its own start time, with a Purple Wave of runners wearing the purple technical running t-shirts they receive on registration.

Last year nearly 2500 University staff, students and alumni took part, forming their own purple wave.

Runners who agree to fundraise for The University’s acclaimed Undergraduate Access Scholarship will be able to run for free. The scheme support’s bright young people who come from the most deprived parts of Greater Swag直播.

University staff and alumni can also register for free when they commit to raising £100 for the scheme.

Head of Head of Vicky Ackerley said: “In just three years the Purple Wave has gone from a crazy idea to an established annual mass participation event for Swag直播 community.

“We are currently the only organisation to have our very own starting wave, and hold the record for the largest entry.

“Whether a seasoned runner, or a complete beginner looking to improve your health and wellbeing, this event provides the opportunity to be part of something really special and raise the profile of our University.”

She added: “It also provides the opportunity to raise money for good causes, and we have raised over £150,000 in the last two years.

“This year we are, in particular, supporting the University’s Undergraduate Access Scholarship, which helps to support students who would not usually be encouraged to aspire to a University education.”

Though Naomi Ogbeta, will be competing in a triple event competition on 20 May, she’s a proud supporter of the project.

She said: “The Great Swag直播 Run is a brilliant event; anything which gets people out and exercising can only be a good thing.

“The Purple Wave is totally unique. As far as I know, no other University has its own wave.

“I urge all students, staff and alumni to register and get involved. You’ll have a brilliant time!”

One of the runners is Media relations Officer Mike Addelman, who works in the Division Communications and Marketing.

Mike has a mechanical heart valve after major heart surgery September 2016, and cares for his disabled wife but is still a keen runner.

He said: “The purple wave is a fabulous way to join with our wonderful University community which is why I’m also involved as an organiser.

“But I love running; I have competed in three marathons, dozens of half-marathons and of course the Great Swag直播 Run!

“I’ve had a lot of health issues to deal with over the past year or so. I am the proud owner of a mechanical heart valve which I received after a six- and-a-half hour operation in September 2016, and had a couple of other operations as well.

“I also care for my wife Sarah who is very poorly. So it’s been a considerable challenge to keep running.”

PhD student Jason Chu from the University of Swag直播 Student Union Run Wild Society said: "Running is a great and affordable way to keep fit. And if you can find a friend or group to run with, it makes it so much better.

“There's such an encouraging buzz! So running with hundreds of others from the University of Swag直播 in the purple wave will be fantastic afternoon of motivated frenzy."

If you want to run the 10k race, register ”

A politics and quantitative methods student from Swag直播 has been crowned Britain’s indoor triple jump champion in Birmingham.

Naomi Ogbeta, beat off the best in the UK at the Spar British Athletics Indoor Championships this weekend.

The athlete, thought of as the brightest talent British triple jumping has had for some time, hopped, stepped and jumped to a British U23 Indoor Record of 13.65m and the British Indoor title.

The success bettered her jump of 13.52m in January, when she was the stand out performer at the Bratislava indoor competition.

The top-ranked Brit has represented both GB Juniors and England seniors in a host of international competitions.

She will find out soon if she is to be selected for the IAAF World indoor championships.

Last year she was one of five student athletes to receive a Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme Stars Award.

The inaugural awards aimed to shine a spotlight on the achievements of talented dual career athletes and reward their incredible efforts, both on and off the field.

Away from athletics, she is also in the University’s , where she has performed improv at venues in Swag直播

She missed the Edinburgh fringe this year because of her training, but does find time to perform in Swag直播 with the Society. But she even did a show immediately after the competition.

“There’s quite a bit of similarity between improv and athletics”, she says “You just don’t know what’s going to happen on stage and you don’t know how far you are going to jump.”

This month has seen Swag直播 City Football Club Captain, Vincent Kompany graduate from Alliance Swag直播 Business School with a Master's in Business Administration (MBA).

Vincent studied , which is made up of core business and management courses, specialist electives and two practical business projects. He was awarded a merit grade and achieved a distinction with a score of 72 on his dissertation project, which looked at how professional football clubs in the Premier League can benefit from home game advantage and achieve game-changing levels of improvement.

Commenting on his achievement, Vincent said: “I’ve always felt education is very important and this was instilled into me by my late mother from an early age. It felt like a fitting tribute to my mother to pursue my academic career by studying an MBA. The programme at Alliance Swag直播 Business School was the ideal option for me.

“When you’re playing football at the top levels, even managing your personal finances starts to become like running a business. It was important to me that I understood what my accountant was talking about and that I could confidently assess a business plan to take ownership of this area of my life. I’m an entrepreneur at the core so have a natural interest in business. The MBA was about backing this up with academic learning and research.

“The MBA itself was extremely rewarding and quickly demonstrated how our learning could be applied practically. It was a huge personal challenge initially and I really had to persevere but the academic staff and other students on my course provided vital support and positivity, which I continuously learned from. I was reassured by the fact other people on the course, who were clearly brilliant in their own professional fields, also faced real human challenges and limitations. Swag直播 has a brilliant ‘get up and get on’ attitude. The Global MBA provided me with the flexibility around my football career to be able to complete the course around the demands of the day job.

“Football is more than a sport. It impacts social issues and is big business. I was able to focus my research on the football industry and how clubs can benefit from home advantage. Part of this involved interviewing 25 footballers who have played at the top levels of international football. I feel I have crossed the finishing line of the course much better than when I started and although I want to continue playing football as long as possible, I may look to use this combination of academic learning and years of playing experience in the future.”

This international MBA promises to fit around a student’s career and personal commitments, providing a flexible and cohesive blend of face-to-face workshop residentials and online interactive elements. The workshops allow students to learn in small group environments through the University of Swag直播’s network of global centres (Swag直播, Dubai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Shanghai or Sao Paulo) from expert faculty and peers who are well-respected professionals. This learning is complemented by online interactions with academics, business professionals and peers from all over the world.

The learning in the MBA is applied throughout the programme of studies with a Business Simulation, a live business project, and intensive group work at the workshop residentials, leaving graduates with practical business and management skills to propel their careers.

MBA Programmes Director at Alliance Swag直播 Business School, Xavier Duran added: “Vincent’s remarkable academic performance culminated with an excellent final MBA project that, following robust methodology, concluded with strong and timely strategic recommendations. His graduation is an impressive achievement.

“Having met Vincent on his first day on the course, it has been a joy to watch his progress through to graduation. At the business school, we use a teaching approach we call the Swag直播 Method, which Vincent fully embraced. This focuses on group work, practice-based critical learning and personal reflection.”

An accommodation manager at Swag直播 is taking in the University’s residential estate in a non-stop 24-hour ultramarathon

Paul Burns will follow a 10 km course that will start and finish at Owens Park Hall of Residence, Fallowfield starting on 30 November at 12 noon finishing exactly a day later.

The runner, who will cover around 60 to 100 miles, will be joined by friends, colleagues and supporters throughout the night in his fundraiser for the Key 103 Cash for .

The trial is a step up from last year’s challenge when he ran a marathon before a full day’s work.

Ultrarunner Paul has been competing in ultramarathons for 2 years.

He says having a runner by his side in the night and during the last few hours will help massively with morale.

A 47 minute 10k runner, his plan is to complete each loop in an hour- and then slow up during the last 12 hours.

And he’ll be putting on the purple shirt worn by last year’s , students and alumni who ran the Great Swag直播 Run, as part of the largest ever university group to take part in an organised running event.

He said: “Even though this run is flat, it’s on concrete so that might be hard on the body.

“But it will all be worth it. I love ultra-running because it’s the ultimate challenge and finding out how far can I push myself is an incredible feeling.

“I’ll be delighted to put on the purple shirt – and hope it will inspire people to take part in next year’s Great Swag直播 Run.”

He added: "Please give generously to the Key 103 Cash for Christmas appeal – it’s a brilliant cause and I’m proud to be helping them.

“But I'm also looking for running volunteers to run with me, for however far they want to run.

"Any help during the small hours of the night would be a boost: it doesn't matter how fast or slow you can run - my Ultra pace is far slower than your usual 10k pace.”

Sports mad students at Swag直播 will be able to enjoy world class facilities thanks to the opening of the UK’s largest University all-weather pitch facilities.

The four new floodlit synthetic turf pitches, built by SIS Pitches, were unveiled at the University’s Fallowfield campus, winning the ‘Award for Excellence’ at the annual Sport and Play Construction Association Awards earlier this year.

The 42-week project is the UK’s biggest single new build synthetic pitch project at a University, and includes two hockey and single rugby, football pitches and practice cricket wickets.

Added to the 2 pitches that have been at the site since the late 1990’s, this provides the only venue in the country with six full sized, floodlit pitches all in one place.

Vicky Foster-Lloyd, Head of at Swag直播, said : “Although this was a large and complicated project, we have achieved everything we set out to and are the proud owners of an excellent facility that we know will add massively to the student experience and will provide a world class environment for them and the local community well into the future.”

Hockey player MA International Relations student Tom Lush, 2017 University of Swag直播 Sportsman of the Year, said: “Pride is something important to every University student, and now with the opening of these pitches, this pride will continue to grow inside students for many years to come.’

Amy Tennant, Geography Alumna and Team GB Hockey Player said: “As a past student and player at Swag直播, I understand the importance of good sports facilities to enhance the student experience.

“The new pitches at the University will undoubtedly be a place students remember in years to come as somewhere they played and loved sport.

“Furthermore the pitches provide a facility to enhance hockey in the North of England being available to a large plethora of members in the hockey family, to keep hockey thriving’.

Little known theory could hold key to sporting success /about/news/theory-key-to-sporting-success/ /about/news/theory-key-to-sporting-success/223560An established but little known psychological theory is likely to improve performances across a range of activities, including sport, according to new research published today.

An established but little known psychological theory is likely to improve performances across a range of activities, including sport, according to new research published today.

Perceptual Control Theory can be applied to amateurs or skilled performers alike says psychologist , from Swag直播.

The theory argues that when trying to improve performance, teaching people what to do is less effective than teaching them how to picture the outcome.

It has been already been used to accurately model the skills necessary for fielders to get to the right location on the pitch to catch a ball, such as in baseball or cricket.

But according to Dr Mansell, it could be used across sport and the performing arts.

To test the theory, the 48 participants in Dr Mansell’s study were asked to draw images using different instructions.

The images ranged from complex to simple symbols and participants were asked to either copy them directly, copy from memory, or copy by giving instructions on how to move the pen. They were also told draw the image after being told what it looked like.

Describing the image led to significantly more accurate drawings than giving the instructions for what movements to make.

e said: “We commonly instruct people in terms of the physical actions they must carry out in order to perform any task.

“Our study - which we think is the first of its kind - tests the effect of describing how to perform a skill in terms of the perception of the outcome compared to the observable actions.

“And the results were fascinating: the accuracy of the drawings where participants were told what to perceive was almost as good as copying the image directly.”

The theory could also be applied to dance, says Dr Mansell: learning a complex routine is all about an internal sense of where it feels right, rather than obsessing on movements, he argues.

He added: “There is a physiological explanation to this: muscle groups interfere with each other by contracting against another when performing a variety of tasks – whether that’s drawing, dancing or catching a ball.

“So you may not be able to accurately instruct your limbs what to do, but creating a mental picture of the desired outcome gets around that in efficient manner.

Carla Brown-Ojeda, the student who conducted the study, explained: “Different coaches in sport use a wide array of methods, some of which involve the coach directly instructing the learner how to move. Yet if our research generalises, then a simpler, purely 'perceptual', method might be developed.”

The paper: is published in the Journal of Motor Behavior.

Biomedical science student Seren Bundy-Davis, who was born in the city , bagged a gold medal with Great Britain's 4x400m team at the European Championships last month.

The 21-year-old, who has a guaranteed spot in both the relay and 400 metres race at Rio, met the 400m Olympic qualifying standard after securing a top-two finish in the British Championships.

The European success adds to a excellent 2015 for the student who competes for Wales and Team GB, in which she won three senior medals.

Legendary former hurdler Colin Jackson told the BBC he has as the likeliest Welsh track and field athlete to win a medal in Brazil.

The European Gold was team GB's first since 1969, and their run of three minutes 25.05 seconds was the fastest time in the world this year.

She said: “It’s like a dream to be selected for the Olympics, but now it’s getting closer, it’s getting more real.

“In 2012, I didn't think Rio 2016 would be a realistic aim, as I only joined my coach at the end of that year. However as the years went on and I had international success, I realised Rio was possible.

“It was fantastic to achieve a Gold in in the European championships: the girls ran so well before me, from the moment I got the baton I knew we had a good enough lead for it to be a simple job.

“The aim has always got to be to make the finals, so that will be mine."

She added: “As now my thoughts are turning towards Rio, I’m going to give it everything I’ve got.

“So many people have been there to support me, not least, the sports scholarship at the University, which has allowed me to gain access to advice and support.

“Studying biomedical sciences and training for the Rio Olympics is no mean feat, so I’m grateful the university has given me the flexibility to fit in my lectures with my training timetable. It goes without saying I’m purple and proud!”

Head of Sport the University of Swag直播 Vicky Foster Lloyd, said: “Seren is a great role model for our students who love sport. Earlier this year, she lent her support to the 1000 colleagues from across the University who took part in the Great Swag直播 run and we are so grateful to her for that.

“To know that she inspired so many people to get active and raise money for worthy causes is fantastic. We are so proud of her wish her all the best in the Olympics.”

This was my first time ever running and the 10K even gave me the push to try it. I may not have been the fastest runner but the sense of achievement of going out of your comfort zone is fantastic. It was a wonderful day and I can’t wait for next year, to get even more students and staff involved, especially those who like myself have never run before.

Vicky Foster- Lloyd said: “To line up on the start line with over 1000 colleagues from across the University community, all in purple t-shirts is a memory that I will never forget. Many of the runners had never taken part in this kind of event before and with over 400 stating they were new to running. To know that we have inspired so many people to get active and raise money for worthy causes is so pleasing and demonstrates what a great place the University of Swag直播 is.”
